DJ Madout Steps Up: Leading the Cultural Movement for Ownership of .HipHop
Through equity crowdfunding, Hip Hop finally gains a path to own its digital future
Two weeks ago, on Irie Jam Radio’s Let The Cocks Crow, DJ Madout and I made a major announcement: .HipHop has officially launched its equity crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder — now in the “Testing The Waters” phase.
What nobody expected, not even his co-hosts Dahved Levy and Syn, was that DJ Madout himself revealed he’s the “Lead Investor” in the campaign. That moment was history-making. It wasn’t just radio — it was Hip Hop making moves for ownership.
Even more, my relationship with DJ Madout was cultivated through a contemplated business combination between Digital Asset Monetary Network and BloxX Financial — a connection that has already begun producing tangible outcomes, with more to be revealed soon.
Building a TLD for the Culture
Building a Top-Level Domain (TLD) isn’t easy. Just look at Verisign’s .COM and .NET — nearly 40 years in the game, roughly 175M domains under management, and approximately $1.5B in annual revenue.
At .HipHop, the challenge is even greater. We’re not just building a TLD — we’re building an extension fully rooted in a global culture as rich and complex as Hip Hop itself. That’s why having seasoned domain experts like Monte Cahn and Jeff Neuman as executive partners is crucial — they know what to do. And it’s why forward-thinking organizations like Unstoppable Domains are already signaling support — they know where the future is heading.
Moreover, unlike most other TLDs, .HipHop is more than utility, it’s an Online Identity that goes far beyond entertainment.
More Than Music: Hip Hop as Identity
Hip Hop isn’t just Rap music. Rapping is something we do. But Hip Hop… naw, Hip Hop is who we are.
Born from the cultural struggles of the 1960s and 70s, Hip Hop has become a global phenomenon. Yet despite its power, the rules are still being written by corporations and conglomerates — not by the communities that birthed the culture.
That’s the problem. And that’s why the movement to have .HipHop owned by the culture exists — specifically using equity crowdfunding in this instance.
As an example, one of the first actions I took to diversify ownership in Dot Hip Hop, LLC, was helping create a special investment vehicle: 20 to 25 people from the community collectively taking an equity stake in .HipHop though a financial investment. That mission continues today through InvestIn.hiphop.
Ownership, Not Just Participation
The mission is simple: Ownership! Not just participation in the marketplace. Not just cultural consumption. But true equity acquired through real capital investment. Even if that investment is as small as $250, it’s still meaningful, because it represents bona fide ownership in .HipHop.
Over the next 24 to 36 months, should the market respond favorably, of course, my goal is for .HipHop to push cultural ownership forward through various forms of capital raises under the JOBS Act (Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act). The aim is to put the power of Hip Hop back into the hands of the communities that birthed this movement — and give the culture something more to be proud of over the next 50 years.
And we’re not doing it alone. It takes the Madouts of the world… and the Frank Nitty’s, Kenneth Reece’s, Corey “CL” Llewellyn’s, Dr. Jerry Doby’s, Anthony Marshall’s, Antoine C Bell’s, Grouchy Greg Watkins’ & Chuck Creekmur’s, Miguel Sanchez’s, and countless… countless others who Live and Breathe this culture every day — not just the music, but the life.
Without that kind of support, .HipHop doesn’t stand a chance of being a multi-billion-dollar asset truly owned by the culture — though it would sadly still likely become a multi-billion-dollar asset, just owned by the same folks who already own the ‘voice’ and ‘buying power’ of the culture.
That’s why DJ Madout’s leadership is so critical. It’s proof that this isn’t just talk. It’s action. And now, we’re calling on others who are ready to step up — not those who talk about it, but those who ‘be about it’.
